GMOs or “genetically modified organisms” are plants or animals created through the gene spicing techniques of biotechnology. This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage, and violation of famers’ and consumers’ rights.

Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. And unfortunately, most products containing GMO are not labeled as such. This is why the Non-GMO Project was created in 2010, as a platform for raising awareness on the GMO issue.

What made your company make a conscious effort to create a non-GMO product line?

Safe and gluten free food is vital for those individuals with Celiac Disease and Gluten sensitivity that affects the intestines and the body’s digestive process. After extensive scientific research – by responsible organizations – of the effects that GMOs foods have on the body, results have shown that GMOs can break down the delicate tissues that line the stomach and the intestines. This can only aggravate and magnify an existing inability for the intestines to assimilate nutrients in a Celiac’s already compromised digestive system.

Why was this personally important to you?

Safe and GF food became even more important to our family 15 years ago when Kristen’s chronic, then declining. health issues were attributed to gluten. Not only has hybridization of wheat been shown to hamper the digestive process, but the more our food is altered, it may have less vital nutrition and become less safe. A food’s structure may be changed through genetic modifications, but our bodies do not necessarily change or adapt to digest those changes.

Our family has an amazing heritage of health and wellness in Kristen’s grandmother, Dorothea Bell. Dorothea is 95, takes no medications, and still lives in her apartment, while studying health trends and nutrition every day. She has been an advocate for safe and nutritious food for decades, and her longevity has been foundational in Kristen’s family for many years.

What are the main benefits of your non-GMO products for your customers?

The greatest reward from what Kristens does is the trust of customers. They are the reason that Kristens strives to create products that are safe, healthy, and delicious.
